AI-Powered Search Improvements Coming to Google Mobile
Google is enhancing mobile search with two new AI features rolling out first on premium Android phones. The goal is to make lookup faster without having to switch apps. However, more commerce potential means more ads too.
Called Circle to Search and AI-powered multi-search, these capabilities build on Google's push towards an AI-first search experience. Circle to Search lets users highlight text, images, or videos in an app and surface related info at the bottom. AI-powered multi-search provides summarized responses to visual searches.
Both features intend to boost utility without changing apps. For instance, users can lookup a restaurant mentioned in texts without leaving the messages. Or get an overview of a game by snapping a photo, all in the Google app.
The commerce angle is clear though. Google Lens visual search is a prime venue for shopping opportunities. The new AI summaries are well-suited for product recommendations too. Unsurprisingly, Google says ads will continue appearing in search results.
That's the tricky balance. Google wants its latest AI to streamline search, not complicate the interface. The incremental rollout through the Search Generative Experience program provides feedback before wide launch.
Early testing gives Google room to polish rough edges. The company stresses focusing on helpful use cases over a flashy "moment" of changeover. There's no timeline for these features to supersede regular Google search.
The long-term vision is an AI-powered search that's clutter-free and useful. For now though, Google is still figuring out how to smarten mobile lookup while avoiding more ad overload. Users will decide if its AI-enhanced search hits the mark.
Hot Take
Google's latest AI-powered search features for mobile aim to make lookup more convenient while opening up more ad opportunities. It remains to be seen if the clutter-free approach succeeds.
