Meta has confirmed it will block the use of its new generative AI advertising tools for political ads and ads about sensitive topics worldwide. This ban aims to limit risks as generative AI remains in the early stages of development.

Generative AI Ad Ban Covers Global Elections

With major elections slated around the world in 2023, Meta is getting ahead of potential issues. Its generative AI ad tools cannot be used for any ads related to politics, elections, housing, employment, credit, social issues, health, pharmaceuticals, or finance.

This global ban will apply as Meta continues testing new generative AI features like text variation and image optimization for its Ads Manager platform. Over half of advertisers already use Meta's AI-powered Advantage tool for ad optimization.

Training Generative AI with Public and Meta's Own Data

To create these AI systems, Meta uses a mix of publicly available data, licensed datasets, and data from its own products like public Instagram posts. Private messages are not used for training.

Meta does tap data from how users interact with AI features like stickers to improve those specific models. A dedicated team focuses on developing Meta's AI responsibly using feedback from experts.

Moving Carefully with New Generative AI Capabilities

Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has touted AI as a top priority for the company's family of apps including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The goal is to integrate generative AI widely across these platforms.

However, Meta admits these technologies are still new. The company wants to collaborate with others to establish best practices. Limiting applications for sensitive use cases like politics and health allows Meta to move carefully as it works to get generative AI right.

Hot Take: Meta Wise to Proceed with Caution on Generative AI

Meta draws valid criticism for its handling of personal data and social impacts. But its cautious approach with generative AI in advertising shows thoughtfulness as this technology evolves.

Responsible development of generative AI will require openness, transparency and collaboration across the tech industry. Meta is right to gather diverse opinions, limit risk factors and share its progress. This thoughtful pace allows time to build ethics and safety practices that put people first.
